The SDARJ Charlotte King Scholarship Program

The Charlotte King Scholarship Program of the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice provides $1500 scholarships to selected Sussex County students who are continuing their education beyond high school, demonstrate commitment to racial justice through community involvement, identify as Black and/or African American, and agree to have their photo and responses used in our materials.

Eligibility:

  • The applicant must be an African American/Black resident of Sussex County, Delaware, attending a public high school in Sussex County.
  • The applicant must be a student in good standing who will be matriculating into a two-year or four-year non-profit college, university, or vocational school for the following academic year. The applicant does not need to designate his or her selection of continuing education institution at the time of the scholarship application.
  • The applicant must have earned a grade point average of 2.50 or higher.

Criteria:

Through responses on the application, the applicant must demonstrate qualities of citizenship and leadership as well as concern for furthering racial understanding, justice, and equity.

The applicant should include any past or current actions they have taken that demonstrate a commitment to racial justice and equity. Examples of these actions may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Student-initiated school or community-based service programs
  • Peer mentoring; homework assistance for younger students; volunteering for literacy education; coaching assistance for other children; work in food banks
  • Student Council or youth-in-government participation
  • Participation in one or more events (workshops, demonstrations, and discussions) on the subject of racial justice and/or equity.
  • Participation in event(s) sponsored by the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice.

3 steps to apply:

  1. Meet the requirements and complete the form by the deadline (11:59 PM on April 1, 2026).
  2. Email a clear pdf, screen shot, or photo of your high school transcript.
  3. Ask a non-related person familiar with your accomplishments (such as a teacher, counselor, coach, administrator, or religious leader) to email a reference letter.

How to Donate to the Scholarship Fund

If you would like to make a donation to the scholarship fund, click here, and select “Scholarships Fund” in the “use this donation for” dropdown.

To donate an entire scholarship, select “Other” and donate $1,500 to the “Scholarship Fund”.
