Eligibility:

  • The applicant must be an African American/Black resident of Sussex County, Delaware, attending a public high school in Sussex County.
  • The applicant must be a student in good standing who will be matriculating into a two-year or four-year non-profit college or university for the 2020-21 academic year. The applicant does not need to designate his or her selection of college or university at the time of the scholarship application.
  • Preference will be given to students demonstrating financial need in a letter from parent, guardian, or student; the letter must be submitted as part of the application materials.
  • The applicant must have earned a grade point average of 2.50 or higher.

Criteria:

The applicant must demonstrate qualities of citizenship and leadership as well as concern for furthering racial understanding and justice.

We ask the applicant to demonstrate understanding of racial justice through action. These actions may include the following:

  • Student-initiated school or community-based service programs;
  • Peer mentoring; homework assistance for younger students; volunteering for literacy education; coaching assistance for other children; work in food banks.
  • Student Council or youth-in-government participation.
  • Participation in one or more events (workshops, demonstrations, discussions, for example) on the subject of justice.
  • Participation in event(s) sponsored by the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice.

Application Deadline: Extended to may 3rd, 2021 (receipt of email, or postmark if using USPS).
Application Acknowledgement: The SDARJ will acknowledge all applications by email, U.S. Mail, or telephone upon receipt.

Scholarship Award Notification:

Proof of acceptance to a qualifying college or university must be received by the SDARJ no later than July 15, 2021. Successful candidates and their parent(s) or guardian(s) will be notified of their award shortly thereafter. Scholarship recipients will be asked to supply a photo, a photo release form and signed permission to use her or his writing or work of art for use in SDARJ promotional materials.
