The history of Black Business Month can be traced back to the year 2004, when engineering entrepreneur Frederick E. Jordan partnered with the president and executive editor of the scholarly publishing company eAccess Corp,’ John William Templeton, to start this annual event.
The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice (SDARJ) will hold a Town Hall on May 21 at the Lewes Library at 6:00 pm. The purpose of the meeting is to advocate for the cessation of hate incidents and harassment directed towards African Americans in Sussex County.
Learn about the recently-submitted SB 10, Compassionate Release Act, expanding the eligibility criteria whereby incarcerated individuals may petition a judge for early compassionate release based on either their serious illness or positive rehabilitation, and how the process will become streamlined and reformed. Connect with legislators and urge them to support this legislation and other legislation that improves the lives of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people.
To understand the challenges Delawareans face when they leave prison and why the recidivism rate is so high, come to a Reentry Simulation and experience first-hand an immersive experience of “walking a mile in a newly-released prisoner’s shoes.”
Much of the racial turmoil in our country today can be traced directly to elements of our history, even before the founding of the United States. Many of the racial stereotypes we hear – or hold – are a direct consequence of intentional economic and public policy and beliefs that have no grounding in genetics. Understanding this history gives us a foundation for action to address the profound inequities that exist in our society today.
The 2025 Black History Month theme, African Americans, and Labor, focuses on the various and profound ways that work and
working of all kinds – free and unfree, skilled, and unskilled, vocational and voluntary – intersect with the collective
experiences of Black people.
