4/9/2019 – Town Hall Meeting on Homelessness in Sussex County
Many of us think we know a lot about this growing challenge, but actually we have little idea of the depth and breadth of the problem and how many people are just one check away from losing their permanent housing.
The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice brought together a panel of housing experts for a town hall meeting on April 9 at the Trinity Faith Christian Center Heritage Hall in Lewes.
A three-person panel of experts addressed a variety of aspects of homelessness, including the demographics of the population, how acute and chronic homelessness happens to individuals and families, attitudes/assumptions about the those without permanent housing, available resources, the growing need for additional support, and how individuals can be of assistance.
Panel members included Janet Idema, the Board President and Founder of the Immanuel Shelter, a code purple shelter in Rehoboth Beach; Rachel Stucker, Associate Director of the Housing Alliance Delaware, where she leads the agency’s work to prevent and end homelessness in Delaware; and Marie Morole, the executive director of Sussex County Crisis Housing Services in Georgetown, which provides temporary housing and case management and referral services to the clients while in the temporary locations.
