SDARJ African American Achievement Award at Rehoboth Elementary School

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice (SDARJ) recently honored Rehoboth Elementary School students Aaliyah Powell and Javion Turnage for their leadership, effort, and excellence. Aaliyah and Javion were recognized in a ceremony at the school and received $20 bookstore gift cards.
Aaliyah Powell is a fourth grader whose favorite subject is reading fiction. Her favorite author is Raina Telgemeier. She also likes social studies, because she is interested in history (especially the English colonies).
When she goes to college, Aaliya wants to study to be a veterinarian because she really likes animals and, if they are ill, she wants to help them. When she is not in school, Aaliyah likes to watch television with her brother or play on her iPad. She describes herself as an indoor person but does like to play softball.
Javion Turnage is a fifth grader whose favorite subjects are math and science because they are fun, hands-on activities. Javion is in the Cape Acceleration Program (CAP) and says learning those subjects comes easily for him, and he enjoys the pace.
When he goes to college, Javion wants to major in science or math to gain background knowledge to become a business owner. He is also interested in becoming a professional baseball or football player. He admires Roberto Clemente because he was a good baseball player and activist.
When he is not in school, Javion enjoys playing baseball and video games.
Javion says leaders should be responsible and respectful. They should listen to adults the first time they are asked to do something.
SDARJ initiated the African American Achievement award to recognize students who represent the ideals of leadership, improvement, effort, and excellence in their schools. Students from each school in the Cape Henlopen and Indian River School Districts are recognized throughout the school year. SDARJ is a nonpartisan organization that educates, informs, and advocates for racial justice, equality, and fair opportunity. For more information, go to sdarj.org.
