SDARJ African American Achievement Award at Cape Henlopen High School
The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice (SDARJ) recently honored Cape Henlopen High School juniors Navin Duffy and Casiya Chandler for their leadership, effort, and excellence. The students were recognized in a ceremony at the school and received $20 gift cards to Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach.
Navin Duffy is an outgoing student who demonstrates responsibility, kindness, and respect. Navin always has a smile on his face and sets a positive example for others. He goes out of his way to be a friendly face to his peers and to adults in the building, giving fist bumps to everyone. Academically, Navin is a wonderful student and classmate. Each year, he has increased his academic load to include more challenging classes. This year, he is taking AP US History and several other Honors classes. Navin also takes classes in the arts, adding piano to his schedule along with Personal Wellness.
Casiya Chandler demonstrates dignity, strength, and responsibility. She is quiet and reserved in school, but funny with her friends and family. She is often seen in the lunchroom, sitting and talking with her friends, as well as reaching out to students whose second language is English, which shows what a kind and friendly person she is. Since freshmen year, Casiya has added more challenging courses to her schedule, such as honors and AP courses, and has been successful. Casiya is hard-working and dedicated to learning.
SDARJ initiated the African American Achievement award to recognize students who represent the ideals of leadership, improvement, effort, and excellence in their schools. Students from each school in the Cape Henlopen and Indian River School Districts are recognized throughout the school year. SDARJ is a nonpartisan organization that educates, informs, and advocates for racial justice, equality, and fair opportunity.
