Honoring Millsboro Middle School Student Hayden Mahammitt
The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice (SDARJ) recently honored Millsboro Middle School eighth grader Hayden Mahammitt for his leadership, effort, and excellence. Hayden was recognized in a ceremony at the school and received a $20 gift card from SDARJ.
According to his school counselor, Mr. Eskridge, Hayden has been an exemplary student since he started at Millsboro Middle. Teachers and coaches always highlight Hayden’s leadership skills, work ethic, and moral compass in and out of the classroom. To date Hayden has completed 10 academic marking periods and only twice has he received less than all A’s for his core classes.
Around the building, Hayden is a silent leader and someone who peers of all grades look up to because it seems as though he is always doing the right thing. Staff and faculty have witnessed Hayden holding peers accountable in the lunchroom for messy tables, in the classroom for incomplete work, and the hallways for rowdy behavior.
Outside the classroom, Hayden is a fantastic athlete and has won numerous awards for his accomplishments on the football field. He also excels on the basketball court. Mr. Eskridge said, “We are proud to be a part of Hayden’s academic and athletic career and cannot wait to witness the things that Hayden will accomplish in high school and beyond.”
SDARJ initiated the African American Achievement award to recognize students who represent the ideals of leadership, improvement, effort, and excellence in their schools. Students from each school in the Cape Henlopen and Indian River School Districts are recognized throughout the school year. SDARJ is a nonpartisan organization that educates, informs, and advocates for racial justice, equality, and fair opportunity. For more information, go to sdarj.org/about.
