Honoring John M. Clayton fifth-grader Jakhi Bines for his leadership, effort, and excellence.
The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice (SDARJ) recently honored John M. Clayton fifth-grader Jakhi Bines for his leadership, effort, and excellence.
According to his teacher, Jakhi arrives at school every morning with a big smile. Jakhi is one of four counsel officers for the school’s National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS), in which he takes the lead on such community projects as the Holiday Canned Food Drive. Even before he was in NEHS, Jakhi was always a big contributor to any fundraiser. He often links in his church to help support the school. Jakhi is a caring student who helps friends make smart decisions and guides them down the safe path.
Surrounded by family, friends, and school staff, Jakhi was honored in a ceremony at the school and received a $20 bookstore gift card from SDARJ.
SDARJ initiated the African American Achievement award to recognize students who represent the ideals of leadership, effort, and excellence in their schools. Students from each school in the Cape Henlopen and Indian River School Districts are recognized throughout the school year. SDARJ is a nonpartisan organization that educates, informs, and advocates for racial justice, equality, and fair opportunity. For more information, go to sdarj.org.
