A Conversation with Professor and Author Eddie S. Glaude Jr. September 15th
Be a part of a live, online conversation on September 15th with New York Times best-selling author, Eddie S. Glaude Jr., about his book Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own, hosted by the Lewes Library, Browseabout Books, and the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice. Registration is required at the Lewes Public Library’s website: lewes.lib.de.us.
In Begin Again, Glaude looks at author James Baldwin’s world following the civil rights movement and sees our own moment reflected back. He writes, “Baldwin’s writing does not bear witness to the glory of America. It reveals the country’s sins, and the illusion of innocence that blinds us to the reality of others. Baldwin’s vision requires a confrontation with our history (with slavery, Jim Crow segregation, with whiteness) to overcome its hold on us.” Glaude asks us to learn from Baldwin’s disillusionment by the failure of the civil rights movement to force America to confront its lies about race.
The live, Zoom-based discussion begins at 5:00 PM on September 15, 2020 and is free to the public. Registration is required at the Lewes Public Library’s website: lewes.lib.de.us. Participants are also encouraged to support the author by purchasing a copy of the book from local independent bookstore Browseabout Books, and each copy purchased comes with an archival bookplate signed by the author. Browseabout Books is also generously donating 25% of book sales to The Bryan Stevenson School of Excellence. Orders may be placed in-person or by calling the store at 302-226-2665.
