SDARJ Meets with Congresswoman Sarah McBride
SDARJ Executive Director Joseph Lawson and Vice President Maria Cordonnier recently had the privilege of meeting with Delaware’s Congresswoman Sarah McBride. A photo of the meeting was shared on Congresswoman McBride’s official website, reflecting her commitment to staying connected with the advocacy organizations working to advance equity and justice across the First State.
During the meeting, Executive Director Lawson and Vice President Cordonnier briefed Congresswoman McBride on SDARJ’s programs and activities, including our youth engagement initiatives, community education work, the Charlotte King Scholarship Program, Black Voices magazine, and our ongoing advocacy for racial equity in Southern Delaware. The conversation was wide-ranging, reflecting the depth of SDARJ’s work and the urgency of the issues facing our community.
We were also proud to inform Congresswoman McBride about SDARJ’s upcoming 10th Anniversary Celebration — a milestone that marks a decade of organizing, educating, and advocating for racial justice in Sussex County and beyond. In a wonderful gesture of support, Congresswoman McBride generously offered to make a statement on the floor of the United States House of Representatives congratulating SDARJ on its 10th anniversary. We are deeply honored by this recognition.
Congresswoman McBride has a strong record on the issues that matter most to our community. She has championed criminal justice reform, supporting the expansion of expungements, an end to mass incarceration, and the legalization of marijuana with automatic expungement of prior convictions. She has been a consistent advocate for voting rights, pushing to protect and expand ballot access and combat gerrymandering. She has also fought for economic equity, expanding healthcare access for thousands of low-income Delawareans through landmark Medicaid legislation, and has long stood against discrimination in all its forms.
SDARJ looks forward to continuing to build this important relationship with Congresswoman McBride as we enter our second decade of service to the Southern Delaware community.
