You are invited to share an evening with your favorite poems

and to discover new perspectives.

Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice presents “The Word:  Poetry and Prose on Family, Faith and Freedom,” This free program celebrates the feast of African-American poetry and prose from the 18thCentury to the present, beginning with Phyllis Wheatley and concluding with The Twin Poets Laureate of Delaware.  It is a joint program of the Alliance’s Education Committee and its Book Group.

“The beauty and the power of African American poetry is so vast, it cannot be contained in our short program of a little more than an hour,” says Dr. Aimee Wiest, Adjunct Professor of Literature at Delaware State and a member of the Alliance’s Education Committee, and moderator of the Alliance’s Book Group, which meets monthly to discuss literature ranging from Ralph Ellison’s The Invisible Man to Chris Lebron’s The Making of Black Lives Matter:  A Brief History of an Idea.  “What an adventure in poetry, prose, history, and philosophy; I have been so enriched as I explore the perspectives of voices speaking for the cause of the humankind” says Kathleen Baker, Chair of the Alliance’s Education Committee Chair, who assisted in creating “The Word” as a tribute to a strong, creative, and resilient people.
