Video: SDARJ July Town Hall: Disability in the Black Community
The prevalence of disabilities in adults in the United States is on the rise. In Delaware, the prevalence of disability in African Americans exceeds the prevalence in other Black communities by approximately 7%.
Where are they? Are we seeing them in our churches, at concerts, in our college classes, out and about in our neighborhoods, and at other community events? Are their needs being met? Would you know where to send them for assistance if they needed help?
Do you interact with them? Do you know the appropriate language and etiquette to use when referring to or interacting with persons with disabilities. One in five African American Delawareans have disabilities. We have so much to learn.
Join the SDARJ as we embark on a journey toward awareness. Together we will learn how to look at others in our community with a focus on their Abilities. As we make that mental transition, we will learn how to access the accommodations available that will allow them full participation and inclusion in our society.
