New Exhibit Opens Friday at the Lewes History Museum. Voices Heard: The History and Legacy of the Black Community in Lewes
This exhibition will be on view until December 29, 2024.
From 2020 through 2023, the Lewes Historical Society, in conjunction with the African American Heritage Commission of Lewes, conducted research into the conditions that lead to a diminished population of the African American Community within the town of Lewes. In 1800 the racial population make up of Lewes existed as 17% enslaved Blacks, 30% free Blacks, and 53% Whites. Present day, there are less than ten Black families still living in Lewes that can trace their lineage to the early 19th Century. Discussion of ignored, overlooked, or purposefully hidden historical facts resulted in emotional reminisces of community elders’
The exhibition will feature more than 20 images ranging in date from the 1880s through the present day alongside daily showings of the film “Voices Heard: The History & Legacy of the American Community in Lewes.”
The opening special event tomorrow from 5-8 pm is free to the public. Starting Saturday, that exhibit is just like any other in the Museum, there is a $5 entry for adults. Children 12 and under are free. Members of the Historical Society are free. That exhibit (Voices Heard) is in our Rotating Gallery which means there is something new in there every year or so. The Voices Heard exhibit will be there until the end of this year – 2024.
The Lewes History Museum is located at 101 Adams Avenue in Lewes, Delaware. Normal hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10am-4pm.
