Musical celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King’s life and legacy on January 12 at 7p.m
Do you love the sweet soul sound of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”? What about the exuberant disco hit, “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now” or the Staples Singers’ catchy groove, “I’ll Take You There”? These songs, along with popular gospel and praise music, will be featured at a musical celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King’s life and legacy on January 12 at 7 p.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth. TV personality Paul Williams, Chief Meteorologist for Coast TV, will emcee the event.
“MLK: From Civil Rights to Black Lives Matter,” presented by the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice (SDARJ), will bring some of the best local talent to the Epworth stage. Performers include Christy Taylor and the Shades of Blue Collective, an intergenerational ensemble that offers inspiration across diverse musical genres; the 18-voice ALLIANCE Singers of the CAMP Rehoboth Chorus; The Reminders, with their unique blend of blues, country, and gospel; the Praise Choir of Friendship Baptist Church of Lewes, singing “Amazing Grace” and “This Little Light of Mine”; and Joyful Expressions from Friendship United Methodist Church of Millsboro. Lorraine Williams and Carla Ennals will perform praise dances, which descend from religious dance of West African origin.
Tickets are $25 and children under 12 are free with reserved tickets. Proceeds benefit SDARJ programs including scholarships, academic recognition, criminal justice reform, Black Voices Magazine, racial reconciliation workshops, and more. To purchase tickets, go to https://bit.ly/mlktickets.
