Five Takeaways from Good Trouble Lives On! July 17, 2025
On July 17th we gathered at the Epworth United Methodist Church to celebrate the life of John Lewis. You can watch the video of the event below.
Here are 5 takeaways from the event:
- As American Democracy falls, we are failing our children, our elders, our immigrant neighbors, and all marginalized groups because of federal budget cuts and the ever increasing threat of a police state. We do have, however, a window of opportunity to catch ourselves. We must be committed and focused, we must organize, strategize and mobilize with people who care. John Lewis said “Sensible people have got to work together!”
- It is very dangerous to demonize people. We need to support or join organizations like ACLU, SDARJ, CAMP Rehoboth, and others who are working to preserve our human rights. We must vote for the candidates in every election who have common sense values. Rather than throwing up our hands, we need to join with others, form new alliances, and build the beloved community John Lewis envisioned.
- The Constitution talks about “we the people.” We are the people! We are required to stand up against bigotry and hatred. We are required to study the issues and spread the word that racism, othering, bullying, and scapegoating are not how we live our best lives and leave the world better than we found it.
- History has shown that no authoritarian government survives if 3.5% of the population engages in sustained, active resistance. The resistance movement is growing daily in America… we are not going to let this be the end of our democracy. We demand a society that is equitable, just, peaceful, and respectful. Get involved in making a better society our new reality.
- The weather moved our Good Trouble event indoors. We had hoped to gather on Johnnie Walker Beach. Watch for announcements of a Johnnie Walker Beach celebration in September!
