The Movies
Sarah’s Oil – 2/20 at 7pm
Sarah Rector, an African-American girl born in Oklahoma Indian Territory in the early 1900s, believes there is oil beneath the barren land she’s allotted, and her faith is proven right. As greedy oil sharks close in, Sarah turns to her family, friends, and some Texas wildcatters to maintain control of her oil-rich land, eventually becoming among the nation’s first female African-American millionaires—at eleven years old.
Queen & Slim – 2/21 at 1pm
A Portrait of a Postman: From Texas to Hermès – 2/21 at 3:30pm
Hermes has allowed only one American to design for their brand in its rich 185-year history. He is an 80-year-old, Black, reclusive postal worker who lives in a run-down house on the wrong side of the railroad tracks in Waco, Texas.
Judas and the Black Messiah – 2/21 at 6pm
Bill O’Neal infiltrates the Black Panthers on the orders of FBI Agent Mitchell and J. Edgar Hoover. As Black Panther Chairman Fred Hampton ascends—falling for a fellow revolutionary en route—a battle wages for O’Neal’s soul.
Love, Brooklyn – 2/22 at 12pm
Roger, a writer, navigates complicated relationships with his ex Casey and his current lover Nicole, a newly-single mother, with the support of his best friend Alan. A modern romance set against the rapidly changing landscape of Brooklyn, New York.
Alice – 2/22 at 2pm
Alice yearns for freedom as an enslaved person on a rural Georgia plantation under brutal and disturbed owner Paul. After a violent clash with Paul, she flees through the neighboring woods and stumbles onto the unfamiliar sight of a highway–and soon discovers that the actual year is 1973. Rescued on the roadside by a disillusioned political activist named Frank. Alice quickly comprehends the lies that have kept her in bondage and the promise of Black liberation. Inspired by true events, “Alice” is a modern empowerment story that traces Alice’s journey through the post-Civil Rights Era American South
Return to Hockessin #107C – 2/22 at 4:30pm
2024 documentary film produced by New Castle County about the historic Hockessin Colored School No. 107C in Delaware, exploring its vital role in the Brown v. Board of Education case, the experiences of its alumni facing integration backlash, and the community’s effort to restore the school building, highlighting a key, often forgotten, part of American civil rights history.
