Charlotte King to Be Inducted into the Delaware Women’s Hall of Fame
We are proud to announce that Charlotte King, Founder and Chair Emeritus of the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice (SDARJ), will be inducted into the Delaware Women’s Hall of Fame this September. Governor John Carney named Charlotte as one of four women selected for this prestigious honor in 2025.
Charlotte’s legacy is deeply rooted in the mission and growth of SDARJ. As our founding Chair, she led the organization for its first eight years, establishing a powerful foundation for racial justice advocacy in Southern Delaware. Her leadership inspired the creation of SDARJ’s monthly Town Halls, legislative advocacy efforts, and the Charlotte King Scholarship, which continues to support and uplift young leaders in Sussex County.
Beyond SDARJ, Charlotte’s contributions span decades of public service and community engagement. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and retired Social Service Administrator, with degrees from St. John’s College in Annapolis and Fordham University School of Social Work. Her leadership includes serving two terms as President of the Delaware League of Women Voters and four years on the Delaware Commission for Women.
Charlotte has served on numerous boards and commissions, including First State Community Action Agency, Lewes Historical Society, West Rehoboth Trust, The Way Home, Speak Out Against Hate, Nassau School Coalition, and the Delaware Criminal Justice Council. She has also volunteered with Beebe Healthcare, St. Peter’s Lewes, St. George’s Chapel, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
Her work has earned widespread recognition, including the Kandler Award from the ACLU of Delaware, the Jefferson Award, the Common Cause Award, and the Mitchell Award from the Stonewall Chapter of Sussex County. She also holds the honorary title of Commander of State Police Troop 7.
As SDARJ Vice Chair Gwendolyn Miller shared, “Charlotte King is not only a founder—she is a force. Her courage, compassion, and clarity of purpose have inspired generations. This honor is richly deserved.”
The induction ceremony will take place in September. SDARJ will host a community celebration to honor Charlotte’s legacy and continued impact. Details will be shared soon.
