August Town Hall Recap – The State of Black-Owned Businesses in Delaware
On behalf of the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice (SDARJ) and the Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce (DEBCC), a powerful and engaging Town Hall was held to discuss The State of Black-Owned Businesses in Delaware.
The event featured opening remarks from Executive Director Joseph Lawson. He welcomed a special keynote message from Aynna Khan, President of the Delaware Black Chamber of Commerce, who emphasized the importance of collective advocacy, resource sharing, and creating equitable opportunities for Black entrepreneurs across the state.
Following Ayanna’s message, we heard from a dynamic group of entrepreneurs who brought transparency, insight, and encouragement through their lived experiences:
- William (Manny) Smack, Jr. – Malani Clothing Co
- Yolanda Mckoy – Hands of Faith Massage
- Charletta Speaks-Floyd – The Gate of Beautiful LLC and Toney Floyd Trucking LLC
- Latisha Dismuke – A Taste of Jazz
The conversation highlighted both the challenges and triumphs of Black-owned businesses, including access to capital, building community support, sustaining growth, and the resilience required to thrive.
This was more than just a discussion — it was a transparent exchange of experiences and strategies, offering both inspiration and practical guidance. Attendees left empowered with deeper awareness of the realities Black business owners face and the collective strength that emerges when we come together to support one another.
We deeply grateful for the participation in this town hall and for the opportunity to bring folks together to contribute to such an important conversation during National Black Business month. We are looking for to continuing this conversation.
