A Welcome Worth the Trip: Touring the New John Dickinson Plantation Visitor Center

Good history is best shared around a table, so that’s where our day began. Members of the SDARJ Community Partner Committee and staff from the John Dickinson Plantation (JDP) gathered for lunch before heading out for a first look at the plantation’s new Visitor Center at 250 Kitts Hummock Road in Dover.

The building is impressive. Operated by the Delaware Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs, the 14,000-square-foot center is a modern gateway to the site, with room for exhibits, hands-on learning, and community gatherings. It includes an activity room for families and school groups, a large multipurpose room, and a 1,400-square-foot screened pavilion. Admission, programs, events, and exhibits remain free.

Then there’s the exhibit. One Land, Many Voices, the permanent exhibit debuting this October, tells the story of everyone who worked the land and shaped its legacy: free and enslaved Black men, women, and children, the Dickinson family, Indigenous peoples, tenant farmers, and indentured servants. The exhibit is visually striking, deeply researched, and welcoming to visitors of every age.   Every detail, from the design to the storytelling, reflects care and respect for the people whose lives it honors.  For those of us who have long asked that these stories be told fully, it was moving to see them given room to breathe.

That quality is no accident. Since our 2024 Town Hall, SDARJ and JDP have built a genuine partnership through school visits, community forums, honest feedback, and shared decision-making. Walking through the center with our JDP colleagues, you could feel it: a team that listens, trusts one another, and builds together. It’s the kind of collaboration that earned our partnership a place in the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience’s Addressing the Silences Toolkit.

So come see it for yourself. Bring the kids, bring a friend, bring your questions. Stop by 250 Kitts Hummock Road in Dover and discover the many voices of this land.
