Marching to Defend the Vote

On Friday, August 28, Americans from across the country will gather at the Lincoln Memorial for “March on Washington 2026: Defend the Vote.” The date marks the 63rd anniversary of the historic 1963 March on Washington, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” address.

Led by the National Action Network in partnership with Martin Luther King III, Arndrea Waters King and a broad coalition of civil-rights, faith, labor and community organizations, the march is intended to be more than a commemoration. It is a call to action at a moment when voting rights and democratic participation face renewed threats.

Organizers hope the march will build public pressure to protect voting access, fair representation and the safeguards of the Voting Rights Act. The coalition is also calling attention to attacks on diversity, equity and inclusion, along with the continuing need for fair wages, affordable housing, equal opportunity and economic justice.

The gathering begins at 8 a.m., with the program scheduled for 9 a.m. By returning to the Lincoln Memorial, marchers hope to connect the unfinished promises of 1963 with today’s struggle—and send a clear message that Americans will stand together against any retreat from democracy, civil rights and justice.

We will leave around 7:00 a.m. from the parking lot next to Concord Pet and that we will be home around 7:00 p.m. ISD is only asking for a $35 donation per person for this trip. We are subsidizing the cost of the bus to make the event more affordable for all. If you have the means, please consider a donation of more than $35 to defray the costs of the day.
