SDARJ African American Achievement Award at Mariner Middle School
The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice (SDARJ) recently honored Mariner Middle School students Kylee Powell and Thmhyne Matthews for their leadership, effort, and excellence. The students were recognized in a ceremony at the school and received $20 gift cards to Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach.
Kylee Powell is a dedicated and high-achieving student who strives for excellence in every aspect of her life. She is currently enrolled in Academic Challenge Math and ELA at Delaware Technical Community College, while playing seasonal sports, which demonstrates her ability to manage her time wisely.
Kylee is a member of the volleyball and basketball teams and an outstanding track star. She is also a Spanish immersion student and has been enrolled in that program since kindergarten. Kylee has been an active member of the National Junior Honor Society since seventh grade. She received an award for perfect attendance this past semester, which is a testament to the consistency she demonstrates in school and in her life every day.
Tymhyne Matthews is an active and dedicated member of the MMS school community who consistently demonstrates leadership, responsibility, and positive character. He is involved in several activities, including serving on the Junior Justice League, where he helps promote fairness and leadership among his peers.
Tymhyne is also a committed student-athlete, playing both football and basketball, and has earned the role of team captain through his teamwork, strong work ethic, and ability to motivate others. In addition, he serves as a Student Council officer, taking an active role in representing his classmates and helping to improve the school environment.
Known for his respectful attitude and commitment to doing his best both academically and socially, Tymhyne stands out as an all-around great student who leads by example and makes a positive impact at MMS every day.
SDARJ initiated the African American Achievement award to recognize students who represent the ideals of leadership, improvement, effort, and excellence in their schools. Students from each school in the Cape Henlopen and Indian River School Districts are recognized throughout the school year. SDARJ is a nonpartisan organization that educates, informs, and advocates for racial justice, equality, and fair opportunity.
