SDARJ African American Achievement Award at Sussex Central High School
The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice (SDARJ) recently honored Sussex Central High School senior Osiah Kelley for his leadership, effort, and excellence. Osiah was recognized in a ceremony at the school and received a $20 gift card to Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach.
According to his teachers, Osiah Kelley has shown great leadership both in and out of school, excelling in academics and athletics, and representing the qualities of a Sussex Central Golden Knight: respectfulness, responsibility, and resilience.
Osiah consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic and intellectual curiosity. He regularly leads group discussions in class and asks thoughtful, insightful questions, often going above and beyond to deepen his understanding of the material. Osiah is a strong advocate for himself and consistently models maturity when speaking to his teachers and peers. Osiah has emerged as a leader on the Sussex Central baseball team, where he regularly mentors younger peers. He volunteers with M.E.R.I.T., which offers minority students from Sussex County academic enrichment and college preparatory opportunities. Osiah also instructs elementary students during summer baseball camp.
According to Mr. DeLeon, Osiah’s AP Government teacher, “Osiah Kelley is one of the most dedicated students I know. His drive for excellence forces everyone around him to meet his standard, and that is rare to find.”
SDARJ initiated the African American Achievement award to recognize students who represent the ideals of leadership, improvement, effort, and excellence in their schools. Students from each school in the Cape Henlopen and Indian River School Districts are recognized throughout the school year. SDARJ is a nonpartisan organization that educates, informs, and advocates for racial justice, equality, and fair opportunity.
