About Us
Mission: To end racism and all its corrosive consequences. Your donation to SDARJ goes to fight racism and the ignorance that fuels it through education and activism.
SDARJ is an organic, grassroots, volunteer-based organization fueled by the dedication of its members and their desire to create positive social change. We have no offices or full-time employees and are funded only by personal donations and small grants.

We do a lot with very little as you will see below:
Black Voices: Black Voices is a quarterly newsmagazine with a circulation of 17,000 in Sussex county. The magazine is inserted into the Cape Gazette Magazine and several publications in western Sussex county. The publication started in November 2021 and covers various issues, including criminal justice reform, voting rights, reparations, Black History in our schools, and legislative initiatives.
Monthly Town Halls: An online forum for critical issues in the fight for racial justice. Cumulative annual attendance at SDARJ town halls is over 1000 people a year. Topics have included Affordable Housing, Juneteenth, Election reform, Hate speech and hate crimes.
Legislative advocacy: SDARJ has advocated for legislative change, including same-day and mail-in voting, police transparency (LEOBOR reform), criminal justice reform, implementation of a Black history curriculum, and abortion rights.
Education: SDARJ provides scholarships to high school seniors (8 in 2022) and weekly recognition of outstanding students in local schools. The education committee also sponsors a monthly book club that meets at the Lewes Library that reviews essential books and films on the Black Experience, such as “The Sum of Us” by Heather McGee.
Dialogue to End Racism: 7-week class to guide people on becoming local activists. Over 125 people have gone through the seminars since 2019 with more coming this spring. Many graduates are now active in SDARJ and other local social justice organizations.
Educational/Cultural Events: SDARJ seeks to provide experiential insights into the struggle for racial equality. Our events include the annual African American Film Festival, co-sponsored with the Rehoboth Beach Film Society, 2021’s Black Poetry event, attended by 125 people, the sold-out Chantel’s concert attended by over 800 people, and bus trips to the African American Museum of History and Culture and Harriet Tubman Museum in Cambridge.
History Committee: The SDARJ History committee was instrumental in helping the Georgetown community fight efforts by its town council to use taxpayer monies to support the only institution in Delaware flying the Confederate flag, the Marvel Museum. The history committee also succeeded in getting a memorial to Patty Cannon, a documented kidnapper of freed slaves, removed from a highway in Maryland.
