October Town-hall: Symbols of Hate: A Community Conversation

When: Tue, October 11, 2022, 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM EDT

Location: Online

Symbols—such as gestures, signs, objects, signals, and words—help people understand the world. They provide clues to understanding experiences by conveying recognizable meanings that are shared by societies.

The world is filled with symbols. But symbols also have a dark side, especially when they are used to convey hate and bias.

Today we see a proliferation of Confederate flags, swastikas, hand gestures, and other symbols of oppression. Just two years ago the whipping post was finally removed from the grounds of the Old Sussex County Courthouse.

What do these symbols mean in today’s society, what harm are they causing and what can we do to counter them?

Join SDARJ for a conversation about these issues. Speakers will include Alon Wilicki, Sr. Research Analyst of the Southern Poverty Law Center, community activists Jane Hovington and Mr. George Beckerman, and Joe Lawson and Tom Irvine, SDARJ Steering Committee members.

SDARJ Is Recruiting: Committee & Board Volunteers

Since our founding, the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice has worked to educate, advocate, convene, and inspire action for racial equity across Sussex County and Delaware. As we mark our 10th anniversary, we’re growing our committees — and we need you.

SDARJ’s 10th Anniversary: Give the Gift of a Decade Well Spent

Ten years ago, the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice set out with a singular focus: fighting racism, and confronting the ideas and misinformation that fuel it. A decade later, that focus hasn’t wavered — and this year, we’re asking our community to help us celebrate by investing in the next ten years.
