October 2016 Book Group

Event Details

October’s selection is Slavery by Another Name (The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II) by Douglas A. Blackmon.

It explores the forced labor of imprisoned black men and women, through the convict lease system used by states, local governments, white farmers, and corporations after the Civil War until World War II in the southern United States. Blackmon argues slavery in the United States did not end with the Civil War, but instead persisted well into the 20th century via convict leasing, sharecropping and peonage.

The SDARJ Book Group usually meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month; 6:00 – 7:45 p.m. at the Lewes Library, 111 Adams Avenue, Lewes, Delaware 19958. Book club participants choose titles to read and discuss at future meetings.
