Ex-Offender Panel: What It’s Really Like Being in Prison and the Challenges of Facing Life on the Outside

Seven previously incarcerated men and women will tell the real story about prison life in Delaware and what it was like after they got out at our April 11 meeting.

During the past year SDARJ hosted panel discussions with the Attorney General, Chief Prosecutor, Chief Justice of the Delaware Supreme Court, Police Chiefs and other officials who addressed criminal justice reform and answered tough questions from our member audiences. On April 11, we’ll hear from those who were directly affected by the system that incarcerates a disproportionate number of African Americans in Delaware.

In addition to their first-hand experiences as prisoners, they’ll share what it’s like to be released back into the community, and the obstacles they faced in finding jobs, housing, and integrating back into society. They’ll also share their recommendations for putting more emphasis on rehabilitation and less on punishment. They’ll also share their views about restrictive housing, aka solitary confinement, which can have devastating effects on the mental health of inmates.

The audience is encouraged to bring questions for our panelists.

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice usually meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 pm, at the Trinity Faith Christian Center at 15516 New Road in Lewes. Our program and business meetings are open to the public. Come to our meetings to learn about racial justice issues, and find out how you may want to become involved with SDARJ.
